Maternity & Newborn Session FAQ:
Q: When is the best time to schedule my maternity session?
A: I recommend reaching out to book your maternity session towards the end of your first trimester/beginning of your second trimester. We’ll aim to schedule your session for anytime after your 30th week of pregnancy.
Q: When is the best time to schedule my newborn session?
A: Anytime after your first trimester of pregnancy! I’ll send you a guide so you know what to expect for your newborn session – scheduling with enough time before your due date allows us to get all the details worked out and gives you a chance to look through the guide before baby arrives. I’ll put your due date on my calendar and ask you to keep me in the loop if the date changes. Once baby arrives (yay! so exciting!), take your time to soak up the experience and then message me that baby’s here. We’ll aim to photograph your wonderful new baby within their first two weeks.
Q: How many photos do you deliver?
A: Unless otherwise specified, you get to select 40 images from the online gallery to print and/or download. I work hard to over-deliver when possible. In these cases, additional downloads may be purchased starting at $5/image and less the more you select with a bulk rate discount if you decide to keep the full album (more info here).
Q: What should I wear for maternity photos?
A: Look through the Maternity Client Closet and let me know if you want to use one of the dresses – this is something I’m super proud to offer for free to my clients! If you have something else in mind, go for it! And of course, consider me your go-to girlfriend if you want to brainstorm something new or bounce an idea off me!
Q: What should I wear when I’m newly postpartum during baby’s newborn photos?
A: I recommend a comfortable, flowy maternity dress! Soft tones with minimal, subtle patterns are best. The color of your outfit should complement but not match any fabrics you plan to dress or swaddle your baby in (“mommy and me” outfits are cute but not for portraits together – they create a camouflage-type effect that makes it hard to clearly see baby among mom/dad’s clothing).
If you want photos of you nursing your baby then also aim for something with buttons, stretchy, or low neckline as opposed to the “nursing friendly” dresses that have peek-a-boo nursing side slits or clip straps (these features don’t photograph well). Now that you know all that – look through my Maternity Client Closet and let me know if you want to use one of these beautiful maternity / postpartum-friendly dresses for your session (they’re free for all my clients to use!).
Q: What should baby wear for newborn photos?
A: The short answer… nothing! The medium-long answer… I supply stretchy photography wraps, blankets, and baskets. As tempting as it is to pick out and dress baby in all the cute tiny clothes, the most memorable and timeless newborn images will be of your baby’s precious characters – their sweet dimples, itty bitty toes, wrinkly legs, head of hair or lack thereof, and bare belly are a few of the details you’ll be thankful to have documented. I embrace natural baby-led newborn photography which means I leave the focus on baby – no elaborate scenes or perilous poses. I will incorporate small props such as florals or a small pumpkin gourd to represent the season your baby was born in, but those details won’t be in every shot so you have a diverse final gallery to enjoy.
Q: Should I bring props or anything to my newborn’s session?
A: This is totally up to you! You certainly don’t need to, as I prepare for every session with the expectation that my clients will not be bringing anything… but that’s just my way of being fully-prepared and the truth is that I love it when clients bring special mementos or heirloom pieces along to the shoot!
Examples of items that you might want to consider bringing to your newborn session:
- Heirloom blankets that are handmade by someone special to your family
- Snuggly stuffed animal doll that you can photograph your baby alongside as they grow to create a visual frame of reference as your baby grows bigger
- Special chunky newborn hats or bonnets are always special. It can be fun to pick one neutral hat that you love when you have your first baby and have each of your babies photographed in it during their newborn sessions! (b.e.happe makes some great chunky knit pom pom hats, there are so many options on Etsy, and Hanna Anderson has a lot of cute options).
