Photography Outfit Inspiration: Mauve for Fall Family Portraits

My favorite hack for coordinating outfits together is to find one piece of clothing that I’m really excited and then build everything else in from there. For this mood board, I found the women’s sweater dress (all sources linked below image) first and loved how the puckered cut around the wrists gives it some elegance but it’s still casual and comfortable looking. Next I remembered seeing the baby romper earlier in the day and knew they needed to be together. Because the romper has a high density floral pattern, I made sure to seek out shirts for the boys that didn’t compete but that had fun character in the cut of the shirts instead.

The most important factor to making this combination of outfits work together, is coordinating each person’s color palette with the overall palette. I tend to lean towards putting each person in coordinating, not matching, outfits (I’ll save the matchy-matchy family photos for our mandatory Christmas morning photo wearing Hannah Anderson PJs).

A note about the baby romper: I do not recommend patterns for photos because they do not usually photograph well. This high density floral pattern is okay because it’s an irregular, organic pattern (as opposed to inorganic, repeating polka dots or stripes) and because the cream sweater covers most of the romper so that the floral pattern only serves as a small accent. This can be a hard balance so if you’re unsure about a floral pattern you’re considering then contact me and I’d be happy to answer your questions.
