MATERNITY PHOTOGRAPHY SESSION AT LAKE MACBRIDE IN SOLON, IOWA

Forever and always, Lake Macbride will remain one of my favorite areas in the greater Iowa City / Cedar Rapids, IA area. This maternity session at the spillway (read: gorgeous waterfall) was yet another reminder of why I’m so thankful to have this state park in Iowa City’s back yard.

With smokey skies in Eastern Iowa from Canada wildfires, we’ve had some pretty epic red sunsets and this was one of those nights. The air quality was thankfully good for us to be out and since this session was on a weeknight we had the waterfall almost completely to ourselves ✨

Have I mentioned how much fun we have during these maternity sessions?!

Spoiler alert: we have fun – good music, fresh florals, and SO many genuine laughs. It’s always so heart-warming the way us mamas come together, have fun, and end the session as friends even though we’ve never met before ♥️

This mama told me several times prior to her session that she’s not an extremely girly girl and doesn’t tend to do much by way of curling her hair, etc. (ditto!). My response: “come as you are, the most beautiful photograph is one that represents the real you.”

I think this is such a wonderful example of how important it is to stay true to yourself for your photography session. I’m here to capture my clients in these beautiful and precious seasons of life so I say let’s put on some fun dresses to celebrate the occasion but if a bold lipstick or curled hair isn’t something in your fancy date night repertoire, then it shouldn’t be in your photography session repertoire either. In short: be you!

WHEN TO SCHEDULE YOUR MATERNITY SESSION

I recommend doing your maternity photography session sometime after your 30th week of pregnancy. When possible it’s best to book your session during the first trimester or early second trimester to ensure you get your preferred date.
